La Porte, Indiana Sucks
Dear City of La Porte Current and Prospective Residents,
The LaPorteSucks.com website was originally founded to provide all unhappy residents of La Porte, Indiana with a place to freely air their complaints about elected officials and the policies they put in place. For a time, this site did that, more or less. Then the original operator of this website moved from La Porte to an undisclosed, out of state location.
When he moved, he left the site in the care, custody and control of another citizen of the city who promised to make it into a place where all unhappy citizens could have their grievances aired. When this did not happen, he re-assumed control of the site. Having nothing else to do with it, he took it down and so it has sat and languished for several years.
I still do not want to run the site. Someone from La Porte needs to run the site. Someone from out of state, no matter how diligent, cannot possibly have the pulse of the people. The person who runs this site must be local and have the time to dedicate to the cause that I once had but no longer had. My passion and dislike for La Porte's elected leadership has not waned. I have no doubt that the atrocities that I reported on daily continue to play themselves out.
Half of the city thought I was out of my mind to object to the giveaway and closure of that block of public roadway by the post office so that the hospital could expand its parking lot. I said that the roundabout would create traffic problems and cause accidents. I said it would make a mess and annoy people. And guess what? I was right. On a recent visit to La Porte to see family, I made it a point to drive down there to the post office to mail a post card off. Sure enough, there was a backup of traffic and the use of "sign language". I asked a couple of people in the post office how they liked the new roundabout, not a single supporter of that project now.
Residents of La Porte reading this should think very carefully about what I am going to say next. For the last several years, the voters have elected a mix of Democrats and Republicans to local offices. And every year, the situation has failed to get better, the abuses of public power have continued, regardless of which party actually won. Because it didn't matter if the Democrats or the Republicans won - the people lost either way. The definition of insanity is to repeat the same acts in the same way over and over whilst expecting different results. Are the people of La Porte insane? Anymore, I don't know.
This year, like every year, the Libertarian Party of La Porte County will run a slate of candidates for many local offices. You should consider voting for Libertarians, especially the local ones, because they are some of the few people that might actually clean up the mess. What do you have to lose? Could it get any worse? At least you can say you tried to clean up the mess. A vote is a terrible thing to waste.
If you are reading this and thinking about moving to La Porte, you may wish to reconsider such a move. La Porte has high taxes, lots of illegal immigrants and very little in the way of public services. Sure, they have nice brick sidewalks down Main Street with pretty brick planters. Go one block off Main Street in either direction and the facade crumbles. What you see is what you get and a whole lot more. Wait until you get your property tax bill, which helps to pay for local law enforcement which is more worried about how many pets you own than dealing with real crime, like vandalism.
Until La Porte changes, I will never even consider moving back and I will tell anyone I encounter not even think about moving to La Porte. For those trying to change the situation and clean up the mess, good luck to you. You'll need it.
For Change,
Keith Kimmel
Former La Porte Resident
